Marriage Ethics
Tumblr media
“I” is the most important word in cultures of western society.  For us moderns, the “I”, one’s own ego, is the defining lens of reality.  If I say it is, then it is.  If it looks this way to me, then it must be.  If I think it is right, well it’s right and no one can tell me otherwise.  Copernicus got it wrong. The world does not revolve around the sun, it revolves around the “I”.  The universe is not heliocentric, it’s egocentric.
“Want” is the second most important word in western cultures.  In effect, it is the driving force of all action.  Ask any person why they did what they did and eventually when you press back far enough it will come down to the fact that they “wanted to.”  Why did you go to college?  To get a job.  Why did you get a job? To make money.  Why did you make money? To buy the stuff I want.  Why do you buy stuff?  Because I want to! String the words together and you get the defining phrase of western culture: “I want.”  Deep within us is a longing desire in search for fulfillment – but fulfillment to what end or for what purpose?  The “I” is in search for stable ground on which to anchor our contingent existence. And so we grasp. Our quest is to simply obtain the desire of whatever our ego wants.  Christian wisdom has always advised that this desired fulfillment be directed away from us, away from the ego. The gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, John) instructing Christian faith have something to say about our quest for personal fulfillment.  It is to be found not in the “I” but in the “thou.”
Christian marriage, in particular, demands the sacrifice of this self-serving ego.  Rather than a mutual agreement between two “I wants” marriage is a covenant between two “I do’s.”  One reason it might be set forth for the lack of success of marriages in our day is that marriage, in the Christian sense, is antithetically opposed to the idolization of the “I” in our culture.  But, it’s in the air we breathe and we hardly notice it until we are forced to our knees with some regret for the way we are behaving or moved by some piece of inspiration . It is the difference between lust and love.  Lust desires the other for the sake of self.  Love desires the other for the sake of the other.  Lust wants.  Love gives.  It is the difference between “I want” and “I do.” The paradigm for this ethic is found in the life and death of Jesus Christ, the one we call Savior of our lives.  Jesus gave himself for the likes of us and underwent the worse that human beings can mete out to another human being for reasons that he and his Father and the Spirit that fuses them both are in love with the human race.  This Trinitarian God of Christian faith wants us where He is.   This gospel narrative – this paradigm of self-sacrifice is supreme inspiration for all our friendships and especially our marriages and family life.  Some can do this; others don’t have it within them to do this, unfortunately. So, how does one move from the mindset of “I want” to “I do?  Jesus, in his life’s pattern, death and resurrection gave us reason for living  away from the “I” where human fulfillment is premised precisely in subtracting from ourselves in order to add to someone or some thing else. How does one change the focus of reality away from the “I” to someone outside of himself or herself?  Such changes are necessary if one is to succeed in a Christian marriage. What we are talking about is a change in the pattern or mode of thinking.  It is a change in habit.  It is the cultivation of those virtues which run contrary to selfish egoism.  It is voluntarily taking up, from a Christian perspective, a critical stance against the culture.  It is the cultivation of an authentic friendship with Jesus Christ in between us. Selfless virtues are the basis of authentic friendship. This is why the Greek philosopher, Aristotle, in his Nicomachean Ethics, trans... Indianapolis:  Hackett, 1999, writes that “those who wish goods to their friends for the friend’s own sake are friends most of all.” Friendship is the willingness to will the good of the other for his or her sake. It looks at the other before considering the “I”.  Friendships are not self-interested.  They simply delight in the goodness of the other as being other. At the center of “Christian” marriage should exist a most intimate and authentic friendship. This friendship sharpens the relationship between the lovers, purifying their desires of all selfishness. For, says the Greek philosopher, “virtue is forged in friendship.” Authentic friendship teaches one how to be selfless.  It cultivates an attitude of “I do”.  In order to re-establish good and healthy marriages it is important that we come to learn how to have good and healthy friendships. We Christians have a lot of work to do to overturn the culture by the sheer witness of our Christian lifestyle.  Christianity was meant to season life’s experience as salt and light (Matthew 5, 13-16).  We need more images of self-sacrificing friendship if we would be turned opposite selfish lives and see more clearly the Christ of our faith. Again, the modeling comes from Jesus and the empirical experience of Christians at their earliest.  The New Testament letter to the Ephesians (5, 25-33) exhorts, “men, love your wives as Christ loves his bride, the Church!”  And how does Christ love his bride?  Well, he sacrificed himself for her.  He bled for her and squeezed out his life for her. There was no egoism or narcissism or me-first in any of that action on his part.   — writers of this article are, Jegar Fickel and Bishop Joseph Perry Mundelein Seminary  2014
" Honoring our wives, which not surprisingly is also one of the best things we can do for our children, requires us to slow down, pay attention, listen, and be truly present."

Royce Clayton Memorial High School Shooting Victims (Trigger Warning)
This is a subject matter that I intend to handle with as much gentleness and respect as I can. As someone who lives in America, though, it is something that I feel happens much too often, and this story is my way of getting my emotions about it out, without causing an argument. This story is not a political debate. Everybody is entitled to their own opinions on gun control/gun safety.
When we get to this point in the story, there will, of course, be a trigger warning. These are fictional victims.
Proceed with caution.

I always love putting post about Beetlejuice and Rabbit and Tigger on here. But right now, I want to go ahead and focus on a very serious thing that happened this past weekend. I woke up Saturday morning to the tragic news that tree members of the Southern Gospel group, The Nelons, were killed in a plane crash near the Wyoming state line. Let me go ahead and tell you the story about how I learned about the Nelons in recent years. I started listening to their music on Spotify, and ever since then, they would and always will be in my religious playlist along with a lot of other artists. When I first heard about them, they released a Country album called "The Americana Sessions," which became a seller in the Country Music market. Around that same time, they performed on The Grand Ole Opry for the very first time, along with Mason Ramsey, who was a newcomer in the country music scene. I also listened to the "Hymns: The A-capella Sessions," and one of my favorite albums, "Peace at Last." The last album they released is "Beautiful," which featured the 2 cover versions of the songs, "Rise Up (Lazurus Song)," and "The Goodness of God." The last song that they released recently as a single that I listened to on the radio during the Nelons tribute show this morning was called "There's A Hole in the Heart." Speaking about the Nelons tribute show, I listened to it this morning on the radio station called Singing News Radio. If y'all have never heard of Singing News Radio, it is a radio station that focuses a whole lot on Southern Gospel music. They did a musical tribute to the Nelons this morning with a song called “I’ll Love You with My Life.” During the show, the DJ's told stories about their success in Southern Gospel and how they got started among many other things. Speaking of humble beginnings, The Nelons were originally called The Rex Nelon Singers who was led by a man named Rex Nelon back in the 1970s. The first song they played by them was "Come Morning." As time went on, the Nelons had released a lot of albums over the years and won numerous awards. In 2016, they were inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame. The three members of the Nelons who were killed in that plane crash were Jason Clark, his wife, Kelly Nelon Clark, and their daughter, Amber and her husband. The other daughter who was not on the plane with them was Autumn Streetman who went on another plane that made it to Seattle when she found out about her family. Before I finish talking about the crash, here's the last story. Several years ago, Amber auditioned for American Idol. At that time, Jennifer Lopez was one of the judges who loved her singing. But one day, Jennifer told her that Amber needed to be on the outward appearance and that her body and clothes needed to be more revealing like the ones in Hollywood. Amber then said, "Forget it!" and left American Idol for good to focus on the things of the Lord, and that is singing gospel music. Amber then released her first album under the name Amber Nelon Thompson. I listened to two songs from that album, which included the Sandi Patty classic, "Another Time, Another Place," and "Give It to Jesus." I listened to the tribute show for two hours today as I was getting ready to go run some errands. Between the Nelons' songs, they played a lot of other songs by other artists including Joseph Habedank, Mark Bishop, Gordon Mote, Triumphant Quartet, The Perrys, and the list goes on. When I go home from doing my work stuff, I will listen to the Nelons' version of "The Goodness of God." Now, I'm going to end about the crash. The Nelons were on their way to Seattle to perform at the Gaither Homecoming Cruise to Alaska when the horrific plane crash happened in Gillette near the Wyoming state line. Not only it was a sad day for Southern Gospel Music, Contemprary Christan Music, but for everyone all over the USA and the world.

Movie Macabre 108 - The Thing with Two Heads (1972)
Tumblr media
Movie Macabre Season 01 - Episode 08 (008) Original Air Date: 15 November 1981
The Thing with Two Heads (1972) Directed by Lee Frost Written by Lee Frost, Wes Bishop, and Joseph Gordon White
Starring: Ray Milland Roosevelt Grier Don Marshall Roger Perry Kathy Baumann
"Doctors are forced to transplant the head of a dying, racist surgeon onto the body of a black death row inmate." (IMDB)
Episode eight of Movie Macabre featured the ridiculous film The Thing with Two Heads. This movie really should have been called "Let's Fuck Up Police Cars."
A racist, entitled, wealth-hoarding, disgusting man thinks that he's so important to the world that he can transplant his head onto another man's body in order to circumvent death. As the old man's death creeps ever closer, a death row inmate agrees to an undisclosed medical procedure, believing this to be an opportunity to clear his name. The racist wakes up on the body of a person of color and complains. Then they go on an extended motor bike ride wherein fourteen police cars are destroyed in absurd, comical ways.
I don't really know what the intended plot of the movie was meant to be. Was it racist man dealing with his racism by helping his host clear his name? Nope. Was it about a death row inmate overcoming impossible odds to prove his innocence? No, not that. Perhaps it was a piece about people coming together? Yeah, no. It was more like someone said "Tie their heads together awkwardly and make 'em ride a dirt bike while we wreck cars all around them!"
Tumblr media
Most of the time, the "effect" looks awkward. The film cuts between a fake head on an obvious shoulder rig and having Ray Milland hunch behind Roosevelt Grier. The most effective special effect was during the scene where they transplant Milland's head on to Grier's neck. The moments where the movie made good use of the two-headedness were rare.
The acting varied wildly. Most of the cast was fairly one-note, usually either "comical villain" or "I'm not taking this nonsense seriously." Roosevelt Grier was the definite standout. He had peaks and valleys to his performance.
The movie was definitely more on the "schlock" side of the spectrum. It wasn't terrible, nor was it particularly entertaining. Rather than sit through the full movie, just find a video featuring all of the car crashes.
Tumblr media
It is worth noting that the two-headed gorilla was played by special effect/make-up artist Rick Baker, four years before he went on to play King Kong in the 1976 King Kong film.

St. Joseph Catholic Church and School
309 S. Perry St.
Wapakoneta, OH
St. Joseph's Catholic Church is a historic Roman Catholic church in Wapakoneta, Ohio. Built in 1910, this church is home to an active Catholic parish, and it has been declared a historic site because of its well-preserved Romanesque Revival architecture. One of the first two Catholic priests in northern Ohio was John William Horstmann, a native of Osnabrück who had settled in the village of Glandorf to the north. Starting in 1832, he made monthly journeys of 50 milesto Stallotown to the south. As Wapakoneta lies midway between these communities, he often visited with and celebrated Mass for its few Catholic families.  After four years of these travels, he established a parish at Petersburg,  approximately 4 miles south of Wapakoneta.
By 1839, the Catholic community in Wapakoneta had grown to the point that it could be created a separate parish, and the members built a small frame church on the southeastern corner of the intersection of Pearl and Blackhoof Streets near the city's downtown. Although no resident priest served the parish in its earliest years, membership grew during the 1840s and 1850s, and a priest was first assigned to the church in 1857. The expenses of maintaining even a small church caused the parish to be deep in debt during its earliest years, but it prospered greatly under the pastorate of Joseph Gregory Dwenger, later Bishop of Fort Wayne.  Since 1850, the parish has been served by priests from the Congregation of the Precious Blood.
By the late 1850s, the parish's membership had grown significantly, and the original church had become too small; consequently, a larger brick structure was built to the east of the original building in 1858. Among its most distinctive elements were a massive single tower, four bells, and a large pipe organ. In later years, elderly parishioners remembered the organ and bells favorably: purchased for $2,200 and $1,700 respectively, they were seen as equal to any instruments of the twentieth century and as worthy of installation in the present church building respectively. This church was replaced in turn by the present structure in the early twentieth century. Construction of this Romanesque Revival building began under the direction of the DeCurtins family in 1910, and it was dedicated on October 8, 1911. A brick building supported by a stone foundation, the church includes architectural features such as two towers and a large rose window at the front, underneath which worshippers may enter the building through several large arched doors.
Architectural historians have divided the Precious Blood-related churches of western Ohio into multiple generations. Only a few buildings remain from the first generation, which consisted primarily of small wooden churches, and only St. John's Church in Fryburg remains essentially unchanged. Replacing these wooden buildings were the churches of the second generation, which were generally small brick buildings without tall spires. The churches of the third generation are mostly High Gothic Revival structures with tall towers, but the final generation of churches includes a wide range of styles. As a Romanesque Revival church built in 1910, St. Joseph's is one of the newest churches in the region, and it plainly is a part of the final generation.
In 1853, the church purchased a frame building adjacent to its property and quickly opened a parish elementary school inside. After sixteen years, a larger structure was desired, and a larger brick building was erected immediately to the east of the church at a cost of $4,000. Continued growth necessitated its replacement by a newer building in 1899; this structure is still standing. With features such as towers and turrets, St. Joseph's School is one of the most architecturally-prominent Catholic schools in the region, along with schools in Minster, St. Henry, and Chickasaw. As the parish continued to expand, a high school was opened in 1919; its classes met in the elementary school building until a new building was completed in 1961. However, financial issues caused the high school's closure in 1974; the elementary students were then transferred to the former high school, and the original elementary school was then leased to the Wapakoneta City School District. As well as completing its school in 1899, the parish also built a rectory in the same year. Expanded in 1922, the rectory was later converted into a convent.
Today, St. Joseph's Church is an active parish of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati. It is clustered with St. John parish in Fryburg, and the entire cluster is part of the St. Marys Deanery. On July 26, 1979, St. Joseph's Church and School were listed on the National Register of Historic Places because of their place in Ohio's history and because of their well-preserved historic architecture. They were among more than thirty different properties included in the "Cross-Tipped Churches of Ohio Thematic Resources," a multiple property submission of architecturally-important churches and church-related buildings in western Ohio related to the Congregation of the Precious Blood. These churches, primarily Gothic Revival structures with massive towers, have become the namesake of this heavily Catholic region, which is commonly known as the "Land of the Cross-Tipped Churches."

Bishop Joseph N. Perry, auxiliary bishop of Chicago and chairman for the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Ad Hoc Committee Against Racism, issued the following statement in response to the Supreme Court of the United States decision in Students for Fair Admissions v. Harvard, issued on June 29:
“Education is a gift, an opportunity, and an important aspect of our democracy that is not always within the reach of all, especially racial and ethnic groups who find themselves on the margins. It is our hope that our Catholic institutions of higher learning will continue to find ways to make education possible and affordable for everyone, regardless of their background. As St. Katharine Drexel, patroness and pioneer in Catholic education, was quoted as saying in our pastoral letter Open Wide Our Hearts: The Enduring Call to Love, “If we wish to serve God and love our neighbor as well, we must manifest our joy in the service we render to Him and them. Let us open wide our hearts. It is joy which invites us. Press forward and fear nothing.”

Bishop Joseph N Perry: Matthew 21, 1-14
Tumblr media
This is one of my favorite parables of the Gospel:
“A king gave a wedding feast for his son.  He dispatched his servants to summon the invited guests to the wedding, but they refused to come…”
Have you ever had the experience of setting up everything for a party or a dinner or some event, sent out invitations and no one shows up, or very few if any, or someone you especially wanted to be there but they proved a no-show?   What a disappointment particularly after all the attention to detail.  Jesus told a parable about a king who threw a wedding banquet for his son. The parable poignantly references God who arranged just such a party a long, long time ago but very few if any showed up.
Jesus invites us to his banquet at church each week on Sunday. Some never show up and never bother to say why.  Jesus likes to see us show up for his banquet. Why would anyone refuse an invitation from the man called Jesus? Without doubt, what we need to be happy, healthy and holy is right here, if only we have eyes to see and are not so caught up with ourselves.
Coming to the altar to be in the presence of the body and blood of Christ is a weekly invitation to the Lord's feast, yet we too often refuse the invitation.  To avoid doing so requires intentional effort to remind ourselves of who God is and who He is, in and for our lives.  Like those special invitations to an event that surprise us in the mail box, Sunday Mass interrupts our daily routine and begs for us to rearrange our schedule in order to oblige the host and His good thoughts about us to include us on his invitation list.  So, we may have to postpone a couple things, may have to bring out our good clothes with which to meet the Lord on his day, and take part in the sacred banquet he has prepared for us.
Our enthusiasm this way is put to the test often by family obligations, business affairs, the disappointments we encounter in life or lack of interest that has overtaken us, or our misplaced attitudes, and as a result, we put God’s invitation on hold or set it aside altogether. Too often we just don’t see God as playing any practical part in the complexities of our daily lives.
Faith, that vitamin pill of life, is the belief that God loves us despite ourselves and that we always have a place at his table. There is always a place-setting in church awaiting our arrival.  But, faith means little until that invitation is accepted.
Bishop Joseph Perry

Quotes by Saint Rachel Held Evans:
“As a Christian, my highest calling is not motherhood; my highest calling is to follow Christ.”
“God's ways are higher than our ways not because he is less compassionate than we are but because he is more compassionate than we can ever imagine.”
“What a comfort to know that God is a poet.”
“This is what God's kingdom is like: a bunch of outcasts and oddballs gathered at a table, not because they are rich or worthy or good, but because they are hungry, because they said yes. And there's always room for more.”
“I have come to regard with some suspicion those who claim that the Bible never troubles them. I can only assume this means they haven’t actually read it.”
“I explained that when our gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender friends aren’t welcome at the table, then we don’t feel welcome either, and that not every young adult gets married or has children, so we need to stop building our churches around categories and start building them around people.”

With the names of those protected come the guys who could be snatched up by the Seattle Kraken. There are a number of big names that have everyone trying to figure out just what general manager Ron Francis will do. Will he take Canadiens netminder, and future Hall of Famer, Carey Price and his hefty cap hit? Is Vladimir Tarasenko the sniper he needs or is his health a big question mark?
